how characters are defined

 In Pulp Fiction, we learn that the character of Vicent Vaga is a lackadaisical, logical and relaxed man. He has taken his bosses, Marcellus Wallace, wife on a friendly date, Mia, as an instruction to keep her busy and prevent her from getting bored.  

 



Vincent drives a Chevy Malibu which establishes him to be a cool and laid back man, although his job involving killing people, his most dangerous job is to keep her company. Her flirtatious personality allows for him to be blindsided. He acts unimpressed when they turn up at Jack Rabbit Slims and suggests they go somewhere else for a steak.  

 

When Vincent and Mia begin to order their food, he is requests for his steak to be blood as hell. This refers to the idea that he could've picked anything on the menu, but this represents him as a strong masculine figure. His reaction of astonishment to the price of the milkshake further establishes him to be a rational and straight forward character. Vincent and Mia also exchange flirtatious conversation that gives the scene a sense of intimacy. To emphasise his idiosyncratic character, he rolls his own cigarettes and lights them with a zippo lighter.  

 



I chose to develop and understanding of how McLovin, Fogell, is defined in the film Superbad (2007). In terms of vehicles that, the film establishes him as a character who doesn't drive so he gets his friends to drive him places. In my opinion, he doesn't seem like the character to pass his test, but if he did, he would drive a second hand Lexus LS400. These cars are rustic, squeaky and take a while for the engine to start, which is a good representation of his character. In a restaurant, McLovin would order mashed potato with baked beans on toast. This meal does not look the most appealing but it fills his appetite. He would order a glass of milk, but attempt to buy a drink of alcohol and miserably fail.  

 

I picture McLovin listening to pop funk music that is reflected in the films soundtrack. I think between his trio of friendship, they would share moments of classical music as a guilty pleasure. To further characterize him, I imagine his favourite colour to be a forest green, or vibrant purple to match his unique personality. His favourite holiday location would be visiting Las Vegas. The bright lights entertainment and excitement suit his character in terms of rebelling. I imagine him to be wear an aftershave with a hint of something unexpected, for example cinnamon or mint. This would pair with his quirky style but also makes him stand out adding to his unique charm. McLovin would live in a house that's a bit offbeat, and maybe with some funky decor with a mixture of modern and vintage styles. He could have a couple movie posters, of the hangover and sponge bob, and a dated fish tank.

Direction from Lewis Arnold, it is an emotive short film that explores the lasting affect a father's death has on his young family.  There is no clear structure which is an alternative approach to film making that we have explored in previous set short films.   'Slap' is a short film about identity, courage, love and acceptance, but also a matter of rage. The play on this nuanced is done successfully by representing a teenage boy who has a passion for boxing, however he also has a secret love and expressing himself in a feminine way as it gives him a sense of freedom. As the film unfolds, we begin to see the struggles he faces when trying to feel accepted in society due to non conforming to the stereotypical masculine role.  The use of objectifying posters of women in the background/on his wall not only show that he has an appreciation for the female body, but also shows his idealised self and what he aspires to look like. They are used to try and deceive his father into thinking that he finds the female body attractive and implies that he has voyeuristic fantasies about women, much like other boys his age. Over (2015) is a short film  that captures a crime scene revolving around a real event. A man fell from his death after hiding in the plane's landing gear on a flight approaching Heathrow airport in 2012. This film is in reverse chronological order which is showcased by the time stamps. This effect is that the peace of a neighbourhood is disrupted but we realise the peace is a way of time passing from the man's death.  In terms of of cinematography, the camera remains static and slow in it's movements to symbolise that we are left wondering how the man ended up there and what crime took place. The audience to do not find out until the aghast final shot, as the man falls from the sky and lands on the car. There is little dialogue so the cinematography is used for the source of narrative.
